Long ago ( I am fairly old) my Dad was a registered Democrat. His friend was a Republican. They used to get together and argue, but in a good natured way. Fast forward to today. I overheard a conversation between two women. It was a friendly harmonious chat. We will call them person A and person B. Many minutes of the same. Then suddenly person B said something that revealed her political affiliation. “I cant talk about this it’s too upsetting.” Said in a harsh tone of voice. Person A quickly made a getaway.
I think this is partly to totally due to social media. The goal of social media is to make you upset! Then you will be in an aroused state of mind and buy something! Thus the opposite political party, the other ethnic group, is exaggeratedy portrayed as evil.
