Sandwich, MA – Barbara Mae Ames, 94, of Sandwich, Massachusetts, passed away on April 13, 2026, at Cape Cod Hospital. She was the devoted wife of the late George H. Ames, who predeceased her in 1998.
Born December 11, 1931, Barbara grew up in Whitman, MA, and graduated from Whitman high school, and later attended Brockton Business School. Throughout her working life, she served her community with steady dedication, including positions at Crow Farm, Stop & Shop, Angelos, and Brockton Hospital. She also took particular pride in her time at the town hall during voting season-work that suited her gentle manner, dependable spirit, and deep respect for civic life.
Barbara’s days were enriched by the people and places she loved. She was involved with the Sandwich Sirens and the Sandwich Band Boosters, and she could always be counted on to find fellowship and laughter at any bingo hall within a ten-mile radius. In the quiet ways that matter most, Barbara was beloved-known for a kind heart, a soft touch, and a warm sense of humor that brought comfort and lightness to those around her.
Barbara is survived by her children: son Scott (Cathy) Ames of WY, son Mark (Karen) Ames of Sandwich, MA, son David (Kerri) Ames of Sandwich, MA, and daughter Sherry Nault (Paul) of Athol. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Timothy and Curtis Nault, and Abigail and Bridget Ames; and her great-grandchildren, Eva and Hunter Nault.
Visiting hours will be held at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Route 6A, Sandwich, MA 02563, on April 19, 2026, from 12pm to 3pm. A Funeral Service will be held at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home on April 20, 2026, from 11:00 am to 11:30 am. Burial will follow at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Connery Ave, Bourne, MA 02542, on April 20, 2026, from 12:30 pm to 12:45 pm.
