ATHOL, MA – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Roger Laffond, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and the son of the late Reginald and Anita Laffond. A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Roger carried his sense of duty, strength, and quiet resilience with him throughout his life.
Roger dedicated many years as a skilled millwright at Erving Paper Mill, where he was known for his strong work ethic and steady hands. Beyond his work, what mattered most to him was his family.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Gloria, the love of his life and his favorite companion whether watching the Red Sox, cheering on the Celtics, or simply enjoying time together. Their life was built on love, laughter, and unwavering support.
Roger leaves behind his children: Dionne (Jon), Troy (Beth), Abbey (Thomas), and Emily (Bobby). He was incredibly proud of each of them not just for their accomplishments, but for the lives they built, the families they created, and the people they became. His pride in his children was constant and unwavering.
His greatest joy was being “Grampy and Pop Pop” to his beloved grandchildren, Darien, Matthew, and Julianna. They were the light of his life, and he treasured every moment spent with them.
He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, many nieces and nephews, and his godson, all of whom he loved dearly.
Roger will be fondly remembered for his familiar place on the porch sitting in his rocking chair, pipe in hand, waving to every car that passed by. Some might say he was keeping an eye on the neighborhood and others might say he was the unofficial mayor of the street, making sure no one got by without a proper wave. It was his way of staying connected and sharing a simple kindness with everyone who passed.
He also found peace in carving wood, creating pieces that reflected his patience and craftsmanship.
Roger’s legacy is one of love, pride, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Worcester for the compassionate care and support they provided to Roger during his final days.
There are no calling hours.
Funerals services and interment in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon will be private.
Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange, is assisting the family.
