Athol, MA – Doris Janet (McCarthy) Steinbach was born in Albany, New York May 12, 1930, to Bess and James McCarthy.
Doris grew up as a Roman Catholic in St. Anne’s Parish in the “South End”, ” graduating from Vincentian Institute High School in 1948 and marrying Matthew Thomas Steinbach in August 1949, a WWII veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. They had nine children together, David, Gary, Christine, Matthew, Daniel, James, Marylou, Tracey, and Patricia.
After marriage Doris joined St. Joseph’s Church Parish in Albany, along with the Christian Wives and Mothers Society, where she became president of the organization. Before moving out of Albany by way of Delmar NY, Doris lived her life as a believer welcoming and caring for those who appeared at her door needing help, regardless of their background.
Doris was a rabid games person teaching and playing Mahjong wherever she went. Be it Yahtzee, Scrabble, Bridge, she was merciless and a joy to play with.
Doris and her family also lived in Acton, MA, Randallstown, MD and Athol, MA making many cherished friends.
Predeceased by her parents, Bess-Stott, and James McCarthy and by her siblings Patricia, James, Deborah, and Kenneth McCarthy and her husband, Matthew Thomas Steinbach as well as three of her five sons, James, Daniel, and Gary.
Survived by her children and their spouses, David and wife Marie Westcott, Christine and husband Michael Flannery, Matthew and Laura Sanders/Vykol, Marylou and husband Bruce Wilkinson, Tracey and husband Chris Donovan, Patricia and husband Scott Pilsbury, Linda Steinbach (daughter-in-law Buckley)
Most lovingly remembered as Gram and GG by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She cherished and loved each one of them.
Doris built a bulwark of strength to meet all that assailed her. With Doris’ Faith resounding a Mighty Fortress for God, a bulwark never failing.

Calling Hours will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2026 from 9:00-10:30 AM at Mack Family Funeral Home, Athol-Orange Chapel, 110 New Athol Rd., Orange, MA.
A Mass will follow at 11:00 AM at Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol, MA.
