ATHOL, MA – James A. Canning II, 89, formerly of Twitchell Street, died Wednesday morning, July 8, 2026 at Gardner Rehabilitation and Healthcare.
Born in Orange on June 16, 1937, he was the son of James A. Sr. and Lillian (Pierce) Canning.
James enlisted into the United States Navy on September 21, 1955, serving aboard the USS Bristol. He was honorably discharged on September 17, 1959.
James worked for the Rodney Hunt Company in Orange for 40 years as a CNC lathe operator before retiring on January 7, 2000.
He enjoyed woodworking including making toy cars. Most of all, James enjoyed visiting with family and friends.
He will be remembered for his kind heart, and his love for people. He found happiness in the laughter of children, the comfort of family gatherings, and the simple moments spent with those he loved.
He found great joy in playing the harmonica and the organ and would often play for the residents of Quabbin Valley Healthcare. It was his way of lifting their spirits and expressing love.
He also found joy in simple pleasures, taking car rides with his favorite music filling the air or trips to the casino. Those moments brought him peace and happiness.
He was a devoted father and grandfather who taught us to appreciate the little things in life- to enjoy the ride, cherish the music and treasure the time spent together.
Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we find comfort in the memories he gave us, the laughter he shared, and the love he so freely gave. He will be forever loved, forever missed and forever remembered.
James is survived by his daughter, Kim Smith and her husband Dan of Orange; grandchildren, Dennis Canning Jr. of Athol, Shawn Canning and his wife Samantha of Texas, and Kyle Smith and his wife Gabby of Orange; great grandchildren, Emma, Madison, Kolton, Zachery, Trent, Trevor and Rylee; a brother Gerald Canning and his wife Donna of Orange; several nephews, nieces and cousins.
The family gives special thanks to the French Connection, Claire, Beth and Charlene for their excellent care of James.
Besides his parents, James was predeceased by his sons, Gerry, Jimmy and Dennis Sr., as well as brothers Dale and Richie.
