The Bridge of Flowers Classic returns to downtown Shelburne Falls this Saturday. This year’s race features a strong lineup of familiar faces including Mac Sloan Anderson, Meghan Davis, Amos Sang, and Ezra Mutai.
Event organizers remind all prospective participants that online registration closes promptly at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. There will be strictly no at-the-door or race-day registration.
Both the 8K Classic and the family-friendly 3K Fun Run/Walk serve DIAL/SELF Youth & Community Services, who return as the fiscal sponsor and primary non-profit beneficiary.
The Fun Run/Walk begins at 8 a.m., while the 8K Classic gets a 9 a.m. start.
Montague Mug Race
The 45th running of the Mug Race takes place on August 15. The 5.5-mile road race starts at 8:30 a.m. from the Village Common. Pewter mugs are awarded to the top male and female finisher. Coffee mugs go to the top three finishers in each division. T-shirts are given to the first 70 runners.
The 20th Mini Mug run/walk kicks off at 8:35. This course is two miles. Both races finish on Station Street, one block from the start. All participants are entered in a drawing for local prizes. There will also be a sale of gentile used clothing with items for athletes. Runners may register on runreg.com.
Legion baseball
Greenfield Post 81 (3) Fall River Post 464 (1) — The Greenfield Junior team avoided elimination with the win over Fall River in the Massachusetts Junior Legion Tournament in Franklin on August 2. Joey Bobala pitched seven innings to pick up the win on the mound. Bobala gave up two hits with three strikeouts. George Gutierrez Jr. (RBI) and Tad Loud both had hits for Greenfield.
Tennis
The Greenfield Tennis Association (GTA) will host a women’s singles event on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. at the Beacon courts. The format depends on the number of entries and will be adjusted so that the event will finish by early afternoon. Event fee is $5 for non-GTA members. GTA members and students are free. Liberty Tax Sharks 13, Tenderloins 5 — Trevor Thomas had four hits including a double with two dingers in the win for the Sharks on July 31. Thomas had four RBI on the night. Marcy Conway added two hits with two RBI. Joel Anderson had three hits and two RBi, while Allison Gage chipped in with two hits for the Tendies.
