A primer for driving into a rotary in Massachusetts. Also known as: The Rules of the Road as we perceive them. I will grant one caveat: we are better than Connecticut drivers. So, here goes:
Rule Number 1. While driving in the rotary, do not brake or stop in the rotary to allow cars to enter the circle. You will receive a great shock as I rear end your car. Please try to remember that once in the circle, you have the right of way.
Rule Number 2. I specifically notice this occurring at the Greenfield I-91 rotary for those entering from the Starbucks side. You are not allowed to drive directly into the rotary without looking into the rotary for on coming traffic. I get it; if the person in the rotary hits your car, they probably are at fault for rear ending you. It would be nice if you at least made the effort to look left.
Rule Number 3. There is no requirement to give a directional signal for getting off the rotary. Let people guess what you intend to do.
Rule Number 4. Do not freeze in your car or panic going into the rotary. If you do that only bad things will happen such as the 10 cars behind you only giving you the horn.
Rule Number 5. Texting while driving in the rotary is truly a really bad idea.
Rule Number 6. If you get into a fender bender, please don’t pull over in the rotary. You may cause a four-mile back up.
Good luck driving into that rotary, simply follow the rules. And there should be no problems.
