In case you don’t remember, last year I wrote about a couple of dreams I had with Donald Trump in them. Well, it just happened again, and this is how it went:
At 7 a.m., my phone rings, and it’s Donald Trump. “Russell, this is Donald Trump, your president, and I have something important to talk with you about. I’m sending a car to pick you up to bring you to Washington. Pack a change of clothes, and be ready to leave your house in an hour.” And he hung up before I could say boo!
By mid-afternoon, I’m in Washington, and whisked into the Oval Office. Donald Trump is sitting at his desk, and we are alone in the room.
“I’ll tell you why you’re here, and this is between you and me, for now. I’ve decided that I don’t want to do this anymore, that I want to quit being the president, and I want you to take over for me,” and he just stops talking. I am stunned, and ask him, “Why me?”
He said, “You’ve got some guts. I know you’ve posted some very nasty things about me, that you think that I’m a real jerk, and the world would be a better place if I was gone. You say all this crap about me, even though you know I could squish you like a bug, so either you’re stupid, or you’ve got guts.” I am speechless!
“But why me, sir, and not JD Vance? After all, he is your vice president. Shouldn’t he be the one to take over for you? And besides, what do I know about being the president of the United States?!”
“I know that J.D. wants the job, and would be ready if I asked him, but, I want somebody who would be different from me, and I mean really different from me, and you are it! When I walk out the door, I don’t want to hear them saying, ‘But he’s not like Donald Trump was.’ Nobody is going to compare you to me. You can do what you think is right, and have all the headaches, and I can go golfing in peace. It’s a win-win.”
“Mr. President — or should I just call you Mr. Trump — can you even do this, quit your job and just appoint somebody other than the next in line as your successor?”
And that’s when I heard Donald Trump laugh for the very first time.
“Are you kidding me? Are you really kidding me? I am Donald J. Trump, and I can do whatever the heck I want!”
“Mr. Trump, sir, even if you can do this legally, I’m not ready to be the president of the United States. Of course I want this country to be better, for everybody here, but I can’t just step into this job.”
And that’s when he smiled and said, “Do you mean like I did?!”
