Phaelon Koski captured wins in three more events, while teammate Alex Sharp was a double-winner to help host Frontier Regional School stay undefeated behind a convincing 104-41 victory over Mahar Regional School in an Intercounty League boys track & field meet held Wednesday in South Deerfield.
“It was just a great team win,” offered Frontier coach Walt Flynn, whose team improved to 5-0 overall, 4-0 in the IL.
Koski took wins in the 100 meter dash (11.8 seconds), triple jump (38-10) and 400 hurdles (61.0 seconds), while Sharp was the winner in the 2-mile (11:04.6) and mile (4:57.2).
Jack Vecellio bested the field in the pole vault, posting a top clearance of 10 feet, 6 inches for the Red Hawks. Jackie Phong won the discus (96-7) and Jake Mattson captured the shot put (33-9).
Mahar (2-2, 2-2) received a trio of wins from Riley Drew, who won the 400 (55.5), 200 (24.6) and long jump (18-10). Henry Gilmore had the top heave of the day in the javelin, measuring in at 124 feet, 1 inch.
Greenfield 114, Pioneer 31
Pioneer 83, Athol 54 — It was a dominant day at home for Greenfield High School, as the Green Wave cruised to a win over Pioneer in a meet that also featured Athol in Greenfield.
Crescens Iavorschi led the way, as he won the 100 meters (11.1), 200 meters (23.3) and long jump (19-4½) in the team’s meet against Pioneer.
Greenfield (3-1, 2-1) picked up field wins from Jake Cote (discus, 84-3), Izaak Vigil-Sagan (shot put, 36-2 ½) and Emanuil Rahubenco (javelin, 149-6).
Theodor Popusoi continued his torrid start to the season in the pole vault for the Wave. The freshman cleared 13 feet even, rolling past the field in the process, and added a win in the 110 hurdles with a time of 17.0 seconds.
Pioneer’s Scott McDonough swept the horizontal jumps in his team’s meet gainst Athol, posting a winning long jump leap of 18-2½ to go with a leap of 40-2½ in the triple jump. He also took first in the 100 meters for his team against Athol (11.6 seconds).
Gavin Curtis took wins in the 400 (60.0) and pole vault (10-0) for Pioneer in its dual meet against Athol.
Athol’s Mason Barrieau took wins in both hurdle events against the Panthers. The senior won the 110 hurdles in 16.7 seconds, and also claimed the 400 hurdles in 60.3 seconds.
Sabis 3, Greenfield 2 — A wild match at second singles was the decisive point, as Sabis’ Remy Girard held on for a 6-0, 1-6, 6-3 thriller over Greenfield’s Jenna Keith to help the host Bulldogs capture a 3-2 independent girls tennis victory Wednesday at Forest Park in Springfield.
Greenfield (4-1) picked up a win at first singles, where Lilya Georgitsa knocked off Sabis’ Emma Smith, 6-2, 6-0.
The other Green Wave victory came at second doubles. The team of Dina Samake and Eva Pruitt-Dahl overcame a 4-0 deficit in the opening set, winning 13 of the next 16 games to earn a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 victory over Venus Nguyen and Katie Sharpe.
“They came back, fought hard and got the win so I was very proud of that,” Greenfield coach Alexis Silk said of the second doubles tandem.
Frontier 3, St. Mary’s 2 — Despite running out a bit of a different lineup, Frontier was still able to get into the win column on Wednesday.
Wins at the top two singles matches helped the Red Hawks edge St. Mary’s, 3-2, in an independent girls tennis match at the Westfield Municipal Courts.
Tori Speth led the way at No. 1 singles, where she knocked off St. Mary’s Jessica Crosby, 6-1, 6-4. At No. 2, Mary Laurens followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Amelia Murray.
Frontier (4-3) picked up its other win at first doubles, where Sophia Patten and Jalen Sullivan moved up from the No. 2 spot to earn a 6-3, 6-2 win over Maura O’Neill and Allison Rougemont.
PV Christian 5, Turners 0 — Host Pioneer Valley Christian didn’t drop a set, sweeping Turners Falls, 5-0, in an independent girls tennis match, Wednesday.
Turners’ Haleigh Greene was edged at No. 1 singles by Skylar Chapdelaine, 6-4, 6-1, while the match at third singles saw Steph Peterson fall to Neriah Henry, 6-3, 6-3.
Turners 3, Westfield 2 — Two singles matches went to a third-set super tiebreaker, but host Turners Falls did just enough to improve to 10-0 on the season. The Powertown edged Westfield, 3-2, in an independent contest, Wednesday.
Will Turn was an easy 6-1, 6-0 winner over Chance Koumentakos at No. 2 singles for Turners. The team’s other win on the court came at first doubles, where Joseph Kochan and Josh Gaulin earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Westfield’s Patrick Orszulak and Alex Dawicki.
Westfield forfeited the match at second doubles.
Both Turners losses were very tight. At first singles, Brian Poirier fell to Westfield’s Ilya Ivanov, 6-4, 1-6, 11-9, while Turners’ Brody Trott dropped a 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 12-10 decision to Westfield’s Nate Emmonds at No. 3 singles.
