On Senior Day for the Mahar Regional boys track and field team, the Senators dispatched crosstown rival Athol High School, 116-24. Thursday at the Woodward Complex in Orange.

Mahar’s Riley Drew had himself a day against the Red Raiders winning four events.

Drew took first in the long jump (18-8¼), the triple jump (38-11), the 400-meter (56.1) and the 200-meter (23.9).

Nathan Sackowicz earned a WMass postseason bid for the Senators with a third place finish in the triple jump (37-3¼ ).

“Today, our jumps were great,” Mahar coach Sarah Woodward said. “Definitely production throughout the season. As long as they get better times. Obviously you want to win too but I think they are improving.”

Mahar’s Justin DeDiego took first in two events for Mahar. DeDiego won the two-mile (11:44.5) and the pole vault (10-00) .

The Red Raiders got two first place finishers.

Sprinter Mason Barrieau won the 100-meter hurdles (18.8) and distance runner Dennis St. Jean won the mile (5:01).

Athol teammate Anthony Marcucci was second in the mile (5.13.6). The young Athol team has progressed throughout the season.

“They are still doing all of their personal bests,” Athol coach David St. Jean said. 

Lucas Seney won the shot put for Mahar with a throw of 33 feet, 7 inches. Peter Currie won the discus, chucking it 95-9.

Henry Gilmore won the javelin for Mahar with a throw of 120-6.

Luke Melanson cleared 5 feet, 2 inches for first in the high jump.  

Alex Currier won the 100-meter (12.1) for Mahar.

The 4×100 team for Mahar consisting of Sackowicz, Seney, Currier and  Anthony Nye took first (48.1) against Athol.

The Senators’ 4×400 team of Thomas Shortis, Currie, Henry Gilmore and Kaleb Lemcke won with a time of 5 minutes, 10 seconds.

The Senators honored seniors Miguel Arce, Ed Bennington, Currie, DeDiego, Sackowicz and Seney at the meet.

Frontier 128, Belchertown 17 — Frontier showed off its depth throughout the lineup to clobber Belchertown, 128-17, in a Suburban League girls track & field meet Thursday in South Deerfield.

Jenna Martin was one of only two athletes to win multiple events for the Red Hawks, who won every event on the day. Martin captured three events herself with a victory in the 400 low hurdles (73.2), long jump (14-6) and high jump (4-8). Freshman Alana Maes-Polan captured the 100 high hurdles (19.5) and pole vault (7-6).

Freshman Lilah Evans won the 100 for the Hawks in 13.7 seconds, and Marisela Ackerman won the 200 in 28.4 seconds. Eighth-grader Lila Roche won the 400 in 72.7 seconds, and sophomore Alyson Barnes won the 800 in 2:51.4. Eighth-graders Eva Howard and Angelina Egland swept the distance events as Howard won the mile in 6:18.7, while Egland won the 2-mile in 14:27.

The 4 x 100 relay team of Sierra Young, Isabel Marrapese, Sierra Warren and Evans won in 55.3 seconds, while the 4 x 400 relay team of Anna Petrin, Roche, Marrapese and Grace O’Leary won in 5:21. Claudie Rajballie won the triple jump (32-4½), Ivy Shattuck won the discus (89-10), sophomore Reilly Isler won the javelin (103-7), and sophomore Amelia Sobieski won the shot put (27-8½).

Softball

Mohawk 18, FC Tech 2 (5 inn.) — For half an inning, Tom Gaffigan had bragging right over his daughter, Katelyn.

Tom’s Franklin Tech softball team jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of their independent contest, only to watch Katelyn’s Mohawk side answer with a five-spot in the home half. It was the start of a big offensive day for the Warriors, as they rolled to an 18-2 victory in five innings.

Caitlin Johnston was 4-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs in the win for Mohawk, which scored 10 runs in the fourth inning. Morgan Roccio was 3-for-3 and Grace Ward was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and a triple. Sophia Guy doubled and drove in a trio of runs.

Hailey Jackson and Brianna Snyder each had a hit and an RBI for the Eagles, with Snyder’s knock a triple. Jackson and Mackenzie Martel scored the runs for Tech, with Jocelyn Crowningshield and Desiree Doane adding singles.

Mohawk’s Nola Bloomer went all five innings in the circle, striking out four and walking two while allowing four hits in total.

Girls tennis

Frontier 4, Turners Falls 1 — A day removed from a loss to Greenfield that featured a trio of three-set matches, Frontier rebounded with a victory on Thursday. The host Red Hawks captured a 4-1 win over Turners Falls in a Tri-County League North contest in South Deerfield.

Tori Speth beat Haleigh Greene, 6-1, 6-1, at first singles, and Frontier teammate Mary Laurens followed with a tight 6-3, 7-5 win over Turners’ Izzy Farrick at No. 2.

“They’re a resilient group of kids,” Frontier coach James Fitzgerald said. “Today was probably the most complete match we’ve played so far this season.

The Thunder picked up their win at third singles, as Steph Peterson defeated Kayleigh Aucoin, 6-1, 6-1.

Frontier’s Cassidy Bardwell and Coleman Hartner got past Turners’ Cece Wood and Emily Dennison, 6-0, 6-2, at first doubles. The match at second doubles was forfeited by Turners.

Greenfield 4, PV Christian 1 — Estera Covalenco and Kaitlyn Phillips won a three-set match at first doubles and Greenfield defeated Pioneer Valley Christian Academy, 4-1, in an independent girls tennis match Thursday in Greenfield.

Covalenco and Phillips dropped the first set to Neriah Henry and Angie Murzin 7-5 but the two came back to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-0 and pick up a point at first doubles.

“I was really proud of first doubles because they put up a really good fight and kept a level mindset and that’s what got them the win,” Green Wave coach Alexis Silk said.

Ava Pruitt-Dahl and Dina Samake beat Alexa Walker and Katya Jemiolo 6-0, 7-5 at second doubles. 

Lily Georgitsa earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory at first singles for the Wave, while Jenna Keith topped Sarah Emerson 6-0, 6-1 at second singles.

The Eagles earned their lone point of the match at third singles where Christine Dokter topped Ngawang Tridytsang 6-4, 6-0.

Pope Francis 4, Mohawk 1 — Another win from eighth-grader Paige King highlighted the day for Mohawk, which dropped a 4-1 decision to league-leading Pope Francis in TCL North play, Thursday.

King snagged her team’s lone point at No. 3 singles, where she upended Carolyn LaCroix, 6-2, 6-3, to continue her run of strong play.

At first doubles, Haley Randall and Maddie Lilly fell to Pope Francis’  Mikayla Messier and Madalyn Ferreira, 6-2, 6-1.
