A pack of area golfers survived a wet Tuesday on the course to punch their tickets to the 38th Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship.
Ledges Golf Club in South Hadley played host to a qualifier for the event, which is set to be played Aug. 6-7 at West Yarmouth’s Bayberry Hills Golf Course. Just one player in the field at Ledges broke par Tuesday, as Cyprian Keyes GC’s Daniel Falcucci was the winner with a 2-under round of 70.
Fifteen golfers in total earned spots in the APL field, including three from Franklin County clubs. Country Club of Greenfield’s Chris Bourbeau shot 2-over 74 and finished in a tie for fourth place to lead the pack. Crumpin-Fox Club’s Michael Mertes was next, one shot back at 3-over 75 to finish in a tie for sixth place, while CCG’s Jake Willis, who also qualified last week for the Mass. Am, tied for 10th place after firing a 4-over 76 to snag one of the final spots in August’s championship.
CFC’s Michael Williams and CCG’s Connor Piecuch captured two of the three alternate spots, finishing just one stroke outside the cut line after shooting 5-over 77s.
CFC’s Jason Germain (79), Justin McCloud (81), Michael Doherty (84) and Tim Brandl (85) also competed in Tuesday’s qualifier, as did CCG’s Tom Herzig (82), Ike Purington (83), Mike Duclos Sr. (84) and Mike Duclos Jr. (92).
• In another APL qualifier played Tuesday at Blissful Meadows Golf Club in Uxbridge, Northfield Golf Club’s Jesse Morgan shot even-par 72 to finish in a tie for second place that also earned him a spot in August’s championship.
Morgan, who tied for second with Matt Lukasevicz of Highfields Golf & Country Club, finished three shots back of winner Daniel Serafin (Blackstone GC), who carded a 69.
Last year’s APL championship had two local golfers finish in the top 15. CCG’s Cody Booska tied for 12th place while CFC’s Nathan Patterson was right behind in 15th place.
