A dominant regular season came to a fitting conclusion, Tuesday.
Mahar Regional School capped an undefeated season on its home turf. The Senators dominated their Intercounty League girls track & field finale, upending Greenfield, 117-27, to claim the league crown in Orange.
Mahar finished 7-0 overall, 5-0 in the IL, to claim the program’s second consecutive regular-season title.
Delaney Parker won a trio of individual events in the victory over the Green Wave (3-4, 2-3). The sophomore swept the sprints, taking first place in both the 100-meter dash (13.0 seconds) and 200 (27.9), and added a field win in the triple jump (33 feet, 4¼ inches).
Mahar senior Chloe Taddeo was a double winner in the throwing events. Taddeo took first in the discus (91-1) and shot put (28-1), while teammates Sienna Moore (pole vault, 8-6), Quincey Drew (javelin, 88-0) and Kamryn Reilly (high jump, 4-10) all captured individual victories. Seventh-grader Carra Fitzgerald had another big day, sweeping both the mile (5:27.9) and 2-mile (12:51.7).
Sophomore Victoria Marin was the lone Greenfield winner, as she took first in both the 100 hurdles (16.9) and long jump (16-8½). Kacia Kinsmith (javelin), Emmaline Thurston (800) and Kandice Lu (2-mile) were all runner-up finishers, while Marin was also second in the high jump.
Mahar’s Caroline Chase (400, 72.0), Grace Rich (800, 2:50.5) and Ava Santana (400 hurdles, 84.2) also captured wins.
Mohawk 96, Pioneer 48 — Lily Wickland-Shearer won three events on Tuesday and Mohawk wrapped up second place in the Intercounty League with a 96-48 victory over Pioneer in a girls’ track & field meet in Buckland.
Shearer won the long jump at 14-2 and also swept the hurdles as she won the 100 highs in 18.2 seconds, and the 400 lows in 80.7 seconds.
Tess Rancourt won both the discus (57-10) and the shot put (27-8½) as the only other double-winner for the Warriors on the day. Serena Bardwell won the 100 in 14 seconds, and Sierra Upton won the 400 in 67.5 seconds. Meghan Davis own the 800 in 2:35, Grace Poplawski won the mile in 4:57, and Erica Szewczyk won the 2-mile in 12:31. Erin Laffond also picked up a victory in the pole vault at 9 feet.
Pioneer had four winners on the day. Caroline Ring won the 200 in 29.9 seconds, and Laila Heilman won the triple jump at 28-7. Alina Cecunjanin won the high jump at 4-4, while Paige Loughman won the javelin at 87 feet.
Frontier 124, Palmer 21 — Marisela Ackerman and Jenna Martin each won two events and Frontier captured all but one event on the day in a 124-21 victory over Palmer in Suburban League girls track & field action Tuesday in South Deerfield.
Ackerman won the 400 in 64 seconds and also captured the triple jump at 29-11. Martin won the 400 low hurdles in 73.5 seconds, and took the long jump at 13-1½.
Lilah Evans won the 100 in 13.3 seconds, and Sierra Warren won the 200 in 28.3 seconds. Alyson Barnes captured the 800 in 2:47.1, Abigail Howard won the mile in 6:04, and Angelina Egland won the 2-mile in 13:20.6. Abby Roberts took the 100 high hurdles in 18.1 seconds. Sierra Young, Isabel Marrapese, Warren and Evans won the 4×100 relay in 55.4 seconds, while Grace O’Leary, Marrapese, Warren and Ackerman won the 4×400 relay in 4:48.5.
Ivy Shattuck won the discus at 88-9, Reilly Isler won the javelin at 94 feet, Amelia Sobieski won the shot put at 29-2½, and Alana Maes-Polan won the pole vault at 7-6.
Athol 78, Turners 66 — Grace Dufour’s big day helped Athol tip-toe past Turners Falls, 78-66, in an IL meet, Tuesday.
Dufour took wins in the 400 meters (71.3), long jump (13-8) and triple jump (28-2), helping the Red Raiders to their first league win of the season (1-4, 1-4). Emily England added wins in both the 100 (14.8) and high jump (4-0).
Turners (0-4-1, 0-3) had two athletes snag multiple victories. Dabney Rollins was a double-winner in both the discus (78-2) and javelin (83-9), while Lily Nieves swept the hurdles by taking the 100 (19.8) and 400 (1:25.9) in addition to a top clearance in the pole vault (6-6).
Athol’s Rashelly Dalmau-Gonzalez won the shot put (27-1½). Turners had the winners in both distance events, with Chloe Summer (mile, 7:16) and Raygan Pendriss (2-mile, 14:03) crossing first.
Frontier 116, Athol 28 — The Frontier train rolled to its regular-season conclusion, Tuesday.
The results yielded an undefeated league title.
The host Red Hawks won every field event, capping an unbeaten season at 7-0 overall (6-0 IL) with a 116-28 win over Athol in an IL boys meet in South Deerfield.
“I think there were an awful lot of question marks at the beginning of the season and we grew up a lot,” Frontier coach Walt Flynn lauded. “The kids had a great work ethic.”
Jackie Phong took wins in both the shot put (37-3¾) and discus (99-5) for the Hawks, while Fisher Talbot-Hills was the high jump winner (5-0) in addition to taking first in the 110 hurdles (18.2). Phaelon Koski also aided the field event cause with a win in the long jump (17-9), Emmett McGranaghan won the pole vault (10-6), Ryan Huit took the javelin (114-0) and Longyao Xu won the triple jump (34-0).
Koski finished with wins in three individual events, as he claimed the 100 meters (11.1) and 400 hurdles (59.4).
Athol won three individual events. Anthony Marcucci was first across in the mile (5:01.1), Jared Rouleau bested the field in the 200 (26.6) and Ryan Young claimed the 2-mile (12:20.1).
Greenfield 102, FC Tech 36 — Theo Popusoi and Jackson Brown paced visiting Greenfield with two individual wins each, and the Green Wave rolled to a 102-36 victory over Franklin Tech, Tuesday in an Intercounty League meet in Turners Falls.
Popusoi was first across the line in the 110 hurdles (17.7) and cleared 11 feet to capture the pole vault. Brown snagged wins in the long jump (16-6) and triple jump (37-2) as Greenfield improved to 5-2 overall, 4-2 in the IL.
Israel Gallardo took the win in the high jump (5-2) for Greenfield, with teammates Izaak Vigil-Sagan (discus, 83-11) and Emmanuel Rahubenco (javelin, 135-10) were also victorious in their respective events.
Franklin Tech’s Zack Conway won the 200 (24.5) and teammate Ryan Duclos topped the field in the shot put (35-8½) in a close battle with Greenfield’s Jake Cote (35-6½).
Mohawk 102, Pioneer 38 — Cullen Brown captured three events on Tuesday as Mohawk upended Pioneer, 102-38, in an IL meet in Buckland.
Brown won the triple jump at 39-2, the high jump at 5-2 and the 400 hurdles at 62.7. Mason Biagini captured the 200 in 25.5 seconds and the discus at 95-8. London Summers won the javelin at 144-2, and Guy Rice-Lesure won the 110 high hurdles at 17.9. Dennis Simmons won the 2-mile in 10:52, Bennett Boucias captured the 400 in 54.3, and Quinton Romer won the 800 in 2:18.5.
Scott McDonough captured the long jump for Pioneer at 19-9¾, while Gavin Curtis won the pole vault at 9-6. Jake Comisky won the shot put at 35-5¼, and Wyatt Keith won the 100 in 12.3 seconds.
