For the Greenfield girls basketball seniors, a dominant final season came to a satisfying conclusion Tuesday night.
Katie Haselton poured in 26 points and Eva Pruitt-Dahl had six points and seven steals, as the two seniors helped the Green Wave cap an undefeated season with a 72-24 victory over Turners Falls at Nichols Gymnasium.
Greenfield finished a perfect 8-0 on the year, winning all eight games by double digits.
“If we had had a full season, I think we would have made a nice little run in the tournament,” Greenfield coach John Hickey said. “But this season is going to make them stronger in the future. The character they’ve gained throughout this whole ordeal has been impressive to watch.”
Haselton finished her standout basketball career with 1,438 points, putting her No. 3 on the all-time GHS list and No. 2 in girls scoring. Angelo Thomas sits atop the list with 1,684 points, while Raegan Hickey is the girls scoring leader with 1,522.
“If we had a full season, Katie would’ve had a legitimate shot at the all-time title,” Hickey said.
Haselton nearly posted a quadruple-double on Tuesday, adding 13 steals, 10 rebounds and six assists. Lillia Kachelmeyer scored 16 points and Amber Bergeron made it three Wave players in double figures with 13 points.
Turners’ Emily Young led the visitors with nine points, while Abby Holloway followed with five points and Morgan Dobias added three.
Frontier 44, Pioneer 21 — Kaitlyn Mackin and Kylie Laford each scored 10 points as the Red Hawks cruised to a 44-21 win in Northfield on Tuesday.
Frontier held an 11-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and the strong defense continued in the second quarter, holding the Panthers to just five points.
“Defensively we didn’t play bad,” Pioneer coach Mike Churchill said. “We just couldn’t put the ball in the hoop.”
Sierra Warren dropped in six points in the win, with Alena Maes-Polan and Abi Howard each scoring four points. Sofia Walker had a season-high nine points for the Panthers in the loss, with Hailey Ring adding four points.
Mohawk Trail 31, Athol 28 — Put the first tally of the season in the win column for the Warriors.
Stella Clark had 10 points and Mya Lesieur added nine as Mohawk Trail earned a 31-28 victory over Athol in Buckland on Tuesday.
“Our defense was on point tonight,” Warrior coach Larissa Harrison said. “Mya Lesieur worked her butt off. I’m very impressed with the girls after having a week off.”
Athol trailed 20-16 going into the final quarter of play, and its offense got hot to make it close late, with Emma Bacigalupo scoring six of her team-high 14 points in the fourth quarter.
Rachel Pease and Grace Ward each had five points for Mohawk Trail in the win. Rozlyn Nelson had seven points for Athol, with Lindsey Leblanc knocking down a 3.
Franklin Tech 47, Hopkins 45 — Trailing by seven with four minutes to go, the Eagles began playing their best basketball with their backs against the wall.
Kaitlin Trudeau scoring seven points in the fourth and Kendra Campbell knocked down three free throws late to lead Franklin Tech to a 47-45 comeback victory in Hadley on Tuesday.
“We had a nice surge there at the end,” Eagle coach Joe Gamache said. “It was nice to see the girls make the comeback.”
Trudeau exploded for 18 points in the game, with Campbell finishing with nine points and Gemanaia Cruz scoring eight points and snatching 12 rebounds. Desiree Doane had four points and four assists in the win.
Kasey Earle dropped 19 points in the loss, with Gabriella Dyjach adding nine points and Chloe Jekanowski scoring seven points.
