No injuries resulted from the blaze, which was reported by a neighbor shortly after 10 p.m.

โ€œItโ€™s a single-family home,โ€ said Legare, โ€œa new home under construction. The cause right now is unknown, under investigation.โ€

Legare said when crews arrived, the neighbor โ€œwas shoveling snow in through the window onto the fire, which probably saved the home.” The chief said the neighbor’s quick action kept the situation from getting much worse.

โ€œThe fire went down through the wall and into the basement,โ€ Legare explained, โ€œand burned up into the trusses. Itโ€™s still an open frame.โ€

Mutual aid was provided by firefighters from Athol, Barre, Phillipston and Templeton. Crews cleared the scene at around 2 a.m. Monday.

Despite frigid temperatures, Legare said the weather didnโ€™t prove to be a complicating factor in fighting the blaze.

โ€œEverything went real smoothly,โ€ he said.
