Lions Club, Monty Tech hold blood drive

PETERSHAM – The Petersham Lions Club in partnership with the Montachusett Regional Technological High School in Fitchburg sponsored a blood drive with Massachusetts General Hospital Bloodmobile on Jan. 25. Fifty units of blood were collected.

This is the third year that the Lions Club and Monty Tech have collaborated in offering the blood drive. Lynne Shaw RN from the Petersham Lions Club coordinated the event with the Massachusetts General Hospital Blood Center. Principal Dayna Carlson worked with the students in the National Honor Society to spread the word and encourage donors to sign up. The January event was led by NHS students Isabella Demar, Bridget Divoll and Evan McGrath. They were joined by their fellow students Grace Williams, Joe Zelly, Olivia Michaud, Lily McEvoy, Kharielle Gasqui, Ivan Barnard, Kim Chincha, Vondelle Nkrunah ,Kayli Arsenault, Joelle Ablaza and Sophia Carlson.

MGH’s bloodmobile is a self-contained bus that has four recliners for those donating and a staff of registered nurses and phlebotomists. They offer drinks and snacks afterwards for donors. The entire process takes 30-45 minutes including completing paperwork, a prescreening by a Bloodmobile staff member and the donation itself.

The next Petersham Lions Club/Monty Tech drive will be May 3rd at Monty Tech High School. Signup is on the MGH Blood donor website athttps://tinyurl.com/bdn9c6ap.

Petersham absentee, early vote ballots now available

PETERSHAM – Those who wish to vote by mail must fill out and return the appropriate form. Use this one to request an Early Ballot – www.sec.state.ma.us/.../vote-by-mail-paper. Use this form if to request an absentee ballot – www.sec.state.ma.us/.../Absentee-Ballot. You must fall under one of the specific reasons to request an absentee ballot.

Residents can either mail the request in or drop it off in the drop off box or in the Selectboard Office.

Phillipston Town Meeting warrant open for submissions

PHILLIPSTON – The Annual Town Meeting Warrant is open for article submissions.

The warrant will close at end of business on Wednesday, Feb. 19.

Please submit any article requests to the Interim Chief Administrative Officer, Peter Morin, via email in a word document. Those who submit a warrant article should follow the article through the Board of Selectmen and Finance Committee meetings to the Town Meeting floor.

Athol open burning permits now available

ATHOL – The 2025 open burning permits are now available. The burning season started Jan. 15 and will go to May 1. For more information, visit www.atholfire.org/burnpermit.

Elms College announces dean’s list

CHICOPEE – The College of Our Lady of the Elms has named the following students to the dean’s list for the fall 2024 semester. Among the students named to the dean’s list were Janessa Butler and Melissa Carlson, both of Athol.

Elms College is a co-educational Catholic college offering a liberal arts curriculum that prepares students holistically for a purposeful life in a diverse and interconnected world.

February fun at the Beals Memorial Library

WINCHENDON – This month, during the week of February school vacation, the Beals Memorial Library will be offering several fun programs and activities to keep kids busy.

On Tuesday, Feb. 18, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., the library is partnering with the Clark YMCA for Autism Friendly Open Swim. Individuals who are neurodivergent, on the autism spectrum, or have other special needs and their families (regardless of age) are welcome to join in for an afternoon of swimming. This free event is only open for participants to who need a more quiet, sensory-friendly environment. The YMCA is located at 155 Central St. in Winchendon. This event has limited space, so registration is required. Contact the library to sign up.

On Thursday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m., join the library for Mad Science Experiments with Melissa. Children ages 5-10 are invited to take part in some hands-on science experiments. Discover different ways to make ice melt. Will a lava lamp keep you warm? And what does an orange have to do with anything? Supplies are limited. Sign up to participate. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Beals Memorial Library.

On Friday, Feb. 21, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., the library is partnering with the Winchendon CAC for Autism Friendly Bowling. The CAC is opening their bowling lanes to two, hour-long bowling sessions for individuals who are neurodivergent, on the autism spectrum, or have other special needs, and their families. Entry is free. Food and drinks are available to purchase from the Sunshine Cafe. This event is located at the Winchendon CAC at 5 Summer Drive in Winchendon. Space is limited. Call the library to sign up.

North Quabbin Garden Club meeting

ATHOL – On Thursday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Millers River Environmental Center in Athol, George LoCascio, Professor at Mount Wachusetts Community College, a person with a broad expertise and experience in environmental science will present a “smorgasbord” of topics such as what is happening in studies at the Mount and how smoke and smoke water effects the germination of native and non-native seeds. Discussion and questions are encouraged. All are welcome. Admission is free.

February movies at the Beals Memorial Library

WINCHENDON – During the month of February, head over to the library to enjoy some free films. All movie showings are free to attend.

On Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 3 p.m., the library will be showing the 1970 classic film “Love Story.” The film follows a boy and a girl from different backgrounds who fall in love regardless of their upbringing–and the ensuing tragedy that strikes them.

On Monday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m., join the library, in partnership with the organization L.O.V.E. Is the Answer and the Winchendon Police Department, for a viewing of the documentary “Walking While Black: L.O.V.E. is the Answer.” As minority communities face racial profiling and police officers face relentless scrutiny by an anxious public, tensions mount. This conflict can only be broken by finding common ground with each other. The documentary will be followed by a community conversation.
