News stories last weekend noted an auction on Cape Cod which featured a number of personal items that had belonged to President John F. Kennedy. While mentioning that his famous White House rocking chair brought $50,000, the articles noted that a number of the items did not attract the minimum bid, and that some had sold for less than what was expected.

The fact that Kennedy has been dead for 55 years means that many of the generation who honor his memory are now also gone. As a writer in an antique journal opined a number of years ago, “Baby Boomer” collectibles (items from the period from 1946 to 1964) may lose much of the current value when the generation that collected them dies off. He recommended not “investing” in such items for that reason.

This writer believes that comment applies to the results of the auction of Kennedy items. While the memory of John F. Kennedy will always be special spot to residents of Massachusetts, his place in history in other parts of the country may be receding as time goes on.
