ORANGE — Two days after losing an 11-game winning streak, the Mahar girls soccer team got back in the win column with a 3-2 victory over Mount Greylock, Monday.
Delaney Parker scored twice for the Senators, and now has 97 points for her career.
Mahar coach Chad Softic would like to see more offense from the rest of the team.
“We don’t anticipate mistakes by the defense and we stop,” Softic said. “There are chances we need to pounce on. We are relying on Delaney way too much on the offensive end.”
Tori Tenney scored Mahar’s third goal on a hard, accurate shot from outside the 18-yard line, with the assist from Micalyn Mailloux.
Jazmyn Vautour returned to the lineup for the Senators after missing some time with a back injury.
“She settles us down big time,” Softic said. “She changes the field for us and is a calming presence in the back.”
Vautour assisted on Parker’s second goal to give the Senators a 2-1 lead in the first half. The pass sailed over Greylock’s defense, giving Parker a breakaway.
Midfielder Natalie Belloli shadowed Madison Ross, Greylock’s main scoring threat, throughout the game.
For most of Mahar’s games, Belloli has the assignment to mark the opponent’s top scoring threat.
“I try to make sure I know my opponents strengths,” Belloli said. “Then I can cut those aspects down.”
The speedy Ross managed an assist with 30 seconds left in the game.
“I knew that she was fast and liked to pass,” Belloli said. “So I stayed back a little bit. I like to do what I can to help the team win. It doesn’t matter to me.”
Against teams that are balanced offensively, the Senators will play a more traditional defense. But Belloli is there designated stopper when a team leans heavily on one player.
“She is an instinctive player,” Softic said of Belloli. “Very athletic and tough and really good on the ball.”
The Senators (12-2) faced an early deficit when Livia Morales scored for the Mounties at 31:26 of the first half.
Mahar quickly tied the game when Parker took advantage of a poor goal kick from the Mounties (7-5-1). With under a minute to play, the Mounties got a goal from Ella Dudley to make it 3-2.
Marie Nottleson made five saves for the Senators.
Mohawk 7, Mahar 1 – Sophia Whitman scored for the Senators in a road loss.
Lilly Fellows had the assist for Mahar (6-4-1, 2-4-1 Bi County).
Turners Falls 3, Mahar 2 — The Senators battled back from a 2-0 deficit against the Thunder, but could not complete the comeback on the road.
Set scores were 25-23, 25-16 22-25, 20-25 and 15-10.
Ava Santana led the Senators (10-4) with 11 kills. Lauren Henne had eight digs while Aria Flematti added 19 assists.
