ORANGE — In a throwback to the whistle-stop train tours of yesteryear’s politics, a trio of Selectboard candidates gathered campaign steam Saturday in a two-hour motorcade through town.

The string of three vehicles sported streamers, signs and recorded brass band accompaniment to the tune of the old Ralph C. Mahar Regional School “fight song,” broadcast from candidate Patricia Lussier’s middle car. Alexandre Schwanz led the parade in his black pickup and Donna Dubour took up the rear.

The motorcade, which launched from historic downtown Depot Street, drew occasional grins and waves from townsfolk, and was greeted by a cacophony of vehicle horns as it cruised through the Hannaford plaza. Occasional bursts of white confetti came compliments of nature in the form of unseasonable snow flurries and hail.

Lussier, Schwanz and Dubour are three among nine candidates vying for four open seats on the five-seat Selectboard in the June 1 town election. Polls will be open from noon to 7 p.m. in the Mahar school gymnasium.
