WENDELL — The cause of the fire in the disassembly building of Scott’s Garage on Mormon Hollow Road on Sunday afternoon was electrical in nature, according to Wendell Fire Chief Cuneo.

The structure caught fire at roughly 3 p.m., Cuneo said, and was extinguished by fire crews 10 to 15 minutes after they arrived. No workers were on site when the fire began and there were no injuries.

Kerry “Doc” Johnson, a managing partner of the garage he co-owns with Scott McPherson and Bill Landry, said the fire started in an electrical panel in the building the business uses to dismantle vehicles. He said the company’s office and warehouse were unscathed and Scott’s Garage was open for business Monday. Johnson said he and the other owners are forever grateful to the fire crews and whoever called 911.

“The fire department put it out before too much damage was done and we’re going to clean up the mess,” Johnson said.

Cuneo said there appeared to be significant smoke damage to the structure’s interior. Fire damage was mostly isolated to the front corner of the building, and the vehicles inside seemed not to be damaged. He said firefighters left the scene at approximately 5:20 p.m.

Wendell firefighters were joined by some from New Salem, Erving, Orange, Turners Falls, Montague Center and Shutesbury. AMR Ambulance also responded.
