Space scholar to visit New Salem Public Library

NEW SALEM — Maura Shea, a Wellesley College alumna and Georgia State University graduate student studying active black holes, is scheduled to lead an interactive presentation of images from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope on Dec. 27, in the New Salem Public Library’s Community Room.

From 7 to 8 p.m., Shea will present highlights of selected images and provide time for questions and discussion. This event is free and open to the public. The James Webb Space Telescope is an infrared space observatory launched from French Guiana aboard a rocket on Dec. 25, 2021. It is the largest and most powerful space telescope to date.

Shea has conducted research at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom and at Haystack Observatory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She has also presented at the American Astronomical Society’s annual meeting and is the co-author of a published paper.
